artist statement
My sculptural practice addresses establishment systems through their objects and material offerings. I construct representations of class systems, militarization, nationalism, and other power structures, exposing them through intuitive and experimental frameworks. Using minimalist aesthetics and poetics, while employing irony and the absurd creates a window into contemporary topics and issues. These approaches reveal complex concerns with greater clarity and impact. Found objects and ephemera are contextualized through curation and unlikely pairings, rendering their individual functions into more complex relationships. Gilded toy rockets loom over concrete rubble with faux olive branches, activating an interpretation of the nuances of innocence, freedom, genocide, and destruction. I make work which yields perspectives through proximity and metaphor. Methodologies are wide ranging and case-dependent, yet often involve repetition and subtle intervention. These constructions frame a landscape where hierarchies and their consequences can be encountered, embraced, or rejected.
